Journey Through the Tribal Villages of Gujarat
Day 01: Arrival in the Textile Hub
Your immersion into the heart of Gujarat begins at the Ahmedabad airport, where a local guide welcomes you with fresh flower garlands. A private vehicle handles your luggage and transfers you directly to your hotel. The evening is yours to resting after your flight and get your first taste of authentic Gujarati hospitality.
Day 02: Heritage Rickshaws and the Road to Poshina
We dive straight into the local culture by boarding open-air auto-rickshaws to wind through the narrow, historic alleys of Ahmedabad’s old city. We spend time at the peaceful Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram before moving to the Calico Museum of Textiles, a global treasure trove of historic Indian fabrics. (Note: Prior booking is mandatory here). After admiring the intricate stone carvings at the multi-tiered Adalaj Stepwell, we leave the urban landscape behind on a scenic drive north into the Sabarkantha hills, checking into a heritage stay in Poshina for the night.
Day 03: Clay Offerings and Hill Tribes
Today is spent traveling off-road. We board rugged, open-top jeeps to traverse the hill tracks surrounding Poshina. Our destination is a fascinating, hidden Terracotta Shrine nestled in a forest glade. Here, indigenous tribes gather to offer hundreds of hand-baked clay horses to their deities to fulfill vows. The rest of the day is a deep cultural dive as we visit the traditional homesteads of the Bhil, Garasia, and Adiwasi tribes, observing their distinct attire, jewelry, and daily routines.
Day 04: Sun Temples and Royal Silks
We journey westward toward the seasonal salt marshes of the Kutch region. Our first stop along the road is the breathtaking 11th-century Modhera Sun Temple, where you can marvel at the mathematical precision of its carved stepwell and solar pillars. Nearby, in the historic town of Patan, we step inside an active artisan home to witness the creation of double-ikat Patola sarees—a geometric silk weave so complex a single piece takes months to finish. We finish the drive in the wetlands of Dasada.
Day 05: Salt Flats and Nomadic Herders
We set out early in 4×4 vehicles across the cracked, sun-baked mud crust of the Little Rann of Kutch. This unique wildlife sanctuary is the final refuge of the endangered Indian wild ass, and we spend our time tracking them alongside migratory desert birds. As the heat of the day softens, our focus shifts to the human history of the plains. We visit the temporary settlements of the semi-nomadic Rabari and Bharwad herders, learning about their livestock traditions and viewing the spectacular embroidery worn by the women.
Day 06: Block Prints and the Mirror Halls of Bhuj
Leaving the wetlands, we head deeper into the desert district toward the historic walled city of Bhuj. Along the way, we wander through Dhamadka Village, a famous hub for Ajrakh block printing, where fabric is dyed using natural minerals and carved wooden blocks. Arriving in Bhuj, we spend the later part of the day exploring the opulent, European-influenced mirror halls of the 18th-century Aina Mahal and the tribal artifacts at the Kutch Museum. We end our day browsing the handwoven shawls at the nearby Bhujordi artisan village.
Day 07: Master Painters and Border Settlements
We travel north to the remote desert borderlands near the Great Rann salt flat. Our first stop is Nirona Village, home to rare, specialized crafts. You will watch a master artisan demonstrate Rogan painting, an incredibly precise technique using thick, castor-oil-based pigments manipulated with a metal stylus. We also meet traditional copper bell makers and wood carvers. Continuing onward, we visit the circular mud huts (bhungas) of the Meghwal community in Bhrindiyara and the Mutwa families in Dhordo, the final village on the Gujarat border, where we can view fine mirror-work embroidery.
Day 08: Ancient Civilizations and Desert Crossings
Today features a long, epic road journey that traces the geographical history of the subcontinent. We cross the salt desert to reach Dholavira, a monumental archaeological site belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization. Your guide will lead you through ruins that are over 4,500 years old, pointing out the sophisticated rainwater harvesting reservoirs, stone fortifications, and early signboards. After exploring this bronze-age metropolis, we complete our drive across the plains to relax at our hotel in Wankaner.
Day 09: Harappan Ports and Palace Luncheons
Turning southeast, we drive toward the historic city of Vadodara (Baroda). Our route takes us past Lothal, another vital archaeological link to the Harappan era, famed for its massive excavated brick basin that archaeologists believe was the world’s earliest shipping dockyard. To break up the journey, we make a special stop at the grand Utelia Palace to enjoy a traditional lunch hosted on the heritage grounds before completing the drive to our hotel in Vadodara.
Day 10: Weekly Markets and Sacred Pithora Art
We wake up early for a trip into the rural hinterlands of Chhota Udepur, timed to experience the bustling weekly tribal market at Kavat Village. The market is a sensory explosion of color, sound, and trade, drawing families from the Rathava and Nayak tribes from miles around. Later, we are invited inside local tribal homes to see the creation of sacred Pithora Wall Paintings—vibrant, ritualistic depictions of horses and gods painted by village artists to bring blessings to the household.
Day 11: World Heritage Mosques and Farewell
On our final day, we check out and drive to the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site situated at the base of a dramatic hill. We spend our time exploring the stunning architecture of the 15th-century Jama Masjid and Kevda Masjid, which showcase a beautiful blend of Hindu and Islamic design styles. After a relaxed lunch in the historic zone, we drive back to Ahmedabad for a farewell group dinner, followed by a direct transfer to the airport terminal for your night flight home.
